Before Your Trip
Bring your camera, warm clothing (layers are best), togs (swimsuit), and a towel. Even on warm days it can be cooler out on the water, so a wind-proof jacket is a good idea.
We provide everything else you need for a perfect day:
- Wetsuits and snorkel gear
- Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards (SUPs)
- A delicious buffet lunch
- Hot drinks (tea, coffee, hot chocolate)
Tutukaka Marina is just a 25-minute drive from Whangarei, and is located roughly halfway between Auckland and Paihia — making it the perfect stop on a Northland road trip.
From Whangarei, follow the scenic Tutukaka Coast road through Glenbervie. There is free parking available at the marina.
By bus: InterCity runs coaches to Whangarei, then the Coastal Commuter shuttle can bring you to Tutukaka Marina.
Absolutely! You don't need to be a strong swimmer to enjoy a Perfect Day. We have personal flotation devices (PFDs), reef boards, pool noodles, and the wetsuits themselves provide excellent buoyancy.
Our friendly crew are always on hand to supervise water activities and make sure everyone feels safe and comfortable. You can also simply enjoy the stunning scenery from the deck if you prefer to stay dry.
Yes, please let us know about any dietary requirements in advance so we can cater for you. You can mention this when booking or call us beforehand.
Our buffet lunch includes a great spread of salads, sandwiches, antipasto, and fresh fruit, along with hot drinks throughout the day (tea, coffee, and hot chocolate).
Please declare any medical conditions before departure, including heart or lung disorders, asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, or any condition that may affect your ability to participate safely.
There is no strict minimum age, but children must be actively supervised at all times. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Personal flotation devices, reef boards, and noodles are available for those who need swimming assistance. Our crew will ensure everyone is comfortable and safe.
Our crew reserve the right to withdraw any participant deemed unsafe and to cancel or modify any activity if safety concerns arise.
Absolutely! Perfect Day is designed for all ages and abilities. We welcome families with children of all ages — our crew are experienced at making sure everyone has a great time, from toddlers to grandparents.
There is no minimum age. Children must be accompanied and actively supervised by a responsible adult at all times. Personal flotation devices, reef boards, and noodles are available for younger or less confident swimmers.
The boat has shelter, indoor seating, toilets, and hot showers — so even if the kids get cold or tired, there is a comfortable space to warm up. The buffet lunch caters to all tastes, and you can notify us in advance of any dietary requirements.
Family Pass (2 adults + 2 children 15 & under) and Teen Pass (2 adults + 2 teens 16-19) are available for the best value.
On the Day
Summer (October – April): Check-in at 10:30am, departing at 11:00am. We return to the marina at approximately 4:00pm.
Winter (May – September): Check-in at 8:00am, departing at 9:00am. We return to the marina at approximately 3:30pm.
Our vessel has both indoor and outdoor seating, an upstairs viewing deck for incredible panoramic views, hot freshwater showers, and toilets. There is plenty of shelter from the weather.
You won't get wet if you don't want to — you can enjoy the whole trip from the comfort of the boat while still seeing everything the Poor Knights has to offer.
There is plenty to keep you busy on your Perfect Day! Activities include:
- Snorkelling in the marine reserve
- Kayaking through caves and archways
- Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP)
- Swimming in crystal-clear water
- Sight-seeing from the deck
All equipment is provided — just turn up and have fun!
Pricing & Booking
Trips start from $165 per person (child) and $275 per adult. Family and teen passes are also available.

Our cancellation policy is as follows:
- 48+ hours before departure: full refund
- 24–48 hours before departure: 50% refund
- No-show: full charge, no refund
Please note: no refunds are available for seasickness or other health-related reasons on the day.
We make the call on whether to sail at 9:00am on the day of your trip. If conditions aren't suitable, we will offer you an alternate date or a full refund.
The Poor Knights Islands have their own microclimate, so conditions at the islands can be quite different from the mainland. We often head out when it looks a bit grey onshore and find beautiful conditions at the islands!
